Paul Munson: Photographer & Writer

The idea of compressing depth into flatness informs my practice. No doubt photographs transport us to another place and time, an impoverished reality. But I want the presence of pixels or ink to sustain interest in the actual work. I seek to reinforce the flatness of the plane by thinking about the ink, its colour, tone; the shapes it defines and how it is absorbed into the paper. These elements evoke circumstances in which the photograph was taken. I regard the relationship between these two spheres of form and performativity as crucial.
